Kindness is a powerful thing. There are many different acts of kindness and all of them make a difference.
Here is one of my favorite acts of kindness: fostering an animal.
We actually found our first dog, Krypto, by fostering him through Adopt a Pet, a group of foster homes based in Mount Prospect.
We volunteered to take of him and several kittens. We raised the wonderful kittens until they found new homes. Then, we still had Krypto. Adopt a Pet had called him 'Cricket' because he was so quiet, while he was still in their care.
(A few days after we adopted him, we found out how loud he really is!)
We took him to my grandparents' house, in hope of them adopting him. We never intended to have a pet.
My grandma saw how happy Krypto was with us. I was playing ball with him in the yard.
It was really love at first sight.
Krypto had a found a home.
That was 2006, and now we have welcome another dog into our household, Bigby (who is laying on my lap as I type this).
Fostering is a great experience and is not exactly supposed to turn out how it happened with Krypto and us.
But only mattered, he found a great home.
Fostering is difficult (we really got attached to those little kittens), but is very rewarding in the end.
It doesn't always get a lot easier to let the animals go home to their forever families, but it is worth it.
Here are three wonderful Illinois no kill rescues that you can consider fostering through:
PAWS Chicago is a wonderful no-kill rescue that has started the animal shelter revolution. None of their animals are in cages (they have little rooms called 'suites') and they take great care of all of them.
Heartland Animal Shelter (where we adopted Bigby) is an amazing no-kill shelter that takes awesome care of their animals. The dogs get lots of exercise, cuddling and playtime and some even attend training classes!
